The Myth of the American Sleepover

13 July 2011

There are plenty of American teenage coming of age films about young boys and girls discovering their own individuality and working out their place in the world, over long summer nights.
Now there are two reasons why these sorts of tales never quite ring true in the UK. (more…)

Renault Clio Dynamique

If you happen to find yourself Internet window shopping for second hand two seated convertible sports cars you’ll find that “starting a family” is a common reason for sale.

“I’ve got fat and can no longer fit into it” never seams to come out, but one wonders. (more…)

Cyclists in London

Let’s all just be friends. It is tough out there, but if we all stick together we can make it better.

To all the proper cyclists out there, the ones who ride all year round with your battle scared bikes and sun tanned lower arms and legs, let’s welcome the newbies. (more…)

My favourite view in California

13 May 2011

Of all the things we saw in California, this view from the bedroom window of the Blue Dolphin Inn, looking out over the pacific was my favourite.

I’ll admit the inner workings of San Francisco’s remaining cable car network is at best niche viewing, but I found this fascinating.

Carbs and Cables

12 May 2011

Breakfast is the most important meal of the d(b)ay. Which is why we had two. At the Golden Coffee Shop we stocked up on a weeks worth of carbs.

I started off with a modest waffle with egg and bacon. AM did her country proud with some scrambled eggs, a hash brown the size of her face, bacon, two rounds of toast and two pancakes. This was just enough to power her up to the cable car museum. (more…)

Getting away from it all

8 May 2011

Choices, choices

It is great to get away from the day-to-day grind every once in a while and go somewhere new and do new things.

With that in mind we spent the first full day of our holiday seeking out new experiences. We explored he city one shoe shop at a time which was a revelation. we are definitely going to try and do it again when we get home. It was such fun.

After five hours or so of not finding the exact thing we were looking for we ended up in a shop called ‘Foot Locker’ inside a shopping centre called ‘Westfield’. It basically just sells lots of trainers, but it is such a simple idea I don’t know why we don’t have them back home.

In the end we bought a pair of the legendary Converse brand of trainer which is only available in America because they are American and you can’t get them in just any old shop back home or anything like that.

What a day!

Book Review: What’s So Funny?

2 May 2011

There are two types of crime. Good and bad.

Good crime is old fashioned, wholesome and organic where people rob banks and intimidate people and use their fists. This is the sort of crime that everybody likes.

There is always a little titillation but nothing too rude and it is all based around the family and fraternity. Occasionally there is even a little ingenuity, charm and or pluck.

And because it is all such a jape the police can’t help but respect these criminals like a teacher trying to hide a smile when a naughty pupil says something funny. And then there is bad crime. (more…)
